The 2013 Major League Baseball Season kicked off on Sunday, March 31^st with a game between the Texas Rangers and the Houston Astros, and this season has already started off with a bang. This weekend, a number of the staff here hopped over to Wisconsin for the wedding of two CursorMania employees. We didn’t know what to expect from America’s Dairyland except lots and lots of cheese (and cheesehead souvenirs, of course). After a bit of a tumultuous start due to the referee strike, the professional season is in full swing. Tonight’s game is between the St. Louis Rams and the Arizona Cardinals. Four weeks into the season and the Cards are one of only three undefeated teams remaining in the NFL. With the Cardinals defense and confidence, it looks like the Rams may have a tough night ahead of them. St. Louis hopes that their rookie first-round pick defensive tackle Michael Brockers, and running back Steven Jackson who has been complaining of a sore groin, can make an impact for the team this evening. Arizona has won seven straight games in St. Louis. However, the two teams combined for a 10-22 record in 2011 — not so hot.

Happy Fashion Week to our CursorMania readers! While everyone may not be familiar with this twice-yearly event, some of our stylish readers who follow designers or read fashion magazines surely know the importance of Fashion Week around the world.

New York is the first and longest-running of the four major Fashion Weeks, the others being Paris, London and Milan. When it started in 1943, it was called New York Press Week and was intended to draw attention away from French fashion during WWII. It was a huge success and allowed U.S. fashion magazines, newspapers, etc. to begin featuring American fashions alongside the French ones.

This year’s New York Fashion Week will run from Sept. 6-13 and will take place at the Lincon Center for the Performing Arts. Prior to 2010, Fashion Week and all the runway shows were held at Bryant Park. For those fashionistas who cannot be in New York during this time, technology is helping bring Fashion Week to the masses. On Twitter, individuals can follow along with the hashtag #NYFW; many fashion houses share sneak peaks on Instagram; and sites like Style.com often feature video clips from runway shows.

This week at CursorMania the entire office has been pretty down. We were very, very sad to say goodbye to the 2012 Olympic Games in London and have already begun the countdown to Rio in 2016. This year’s Olympics Games were full of heart-warming stories. Two that stood out the most were Oscar Pistorius, the South African sprinter who was the first double-leg amputee to participate in the Olympics, and Gabby Douglas, who became the first African American to win gold in the gymnastics all-around. If these two competitors don’t showcase the Olympic themes of hard work, perseverance and dedication, we’re not sure what does.

Despite the Games’ intention to have countries put aside their differences for two weeks, everyone loves a little competition. The United States, China, Russia, Great Britain and Germany left London with the most medals earned. In the top three it was the U.S. with 104 total medals won, China with 88 and Russia with 82. And did you know that 25 world records were set at this year’s Olympiad? Wow!

With all the excitement about Olympic swimming and gymnastics, sports that aren’t widely popular in the United States sometimes tend to be overlooked. Take fencing for example — one of five sports that has been featured at every modern Olympic Games (along with athletics, cycling, swimming and gymnastics). Fencing is part of the combat sports family in which opponents use skill and strategy to outwit and out maneuver their competitor. The modern sport of fencing began in the 18th century during the Italian Renaissance. Different variations became popular in both Spain and France and these three countries continue to dominate the fencing scene.

During the Olympics, fencers use three different weapons: foil, epee and sabre. In foil and epee, points can only be scored when a fencer touches the other with the tip of the blade. In foil only the torso counts and in epee the entire body is fair game. In sabre, opponents may attack the entire upper body excluding the hands and points can be scored with the tip or side of the blade. In the 2012 Olympic Games in London the Italian women won gold for team foil and the Chinese women won team epee.

One of the best parts about the summer is spending time at the beach. Whether it’s just a bike ride away or you have to travel by plane to reach the ocean, the long, lazy days of summer spent swimming and tanning and building sand castles make some of the best memories. Of course, no vacation spot comes without its hazards. At the beach you run the risk of getting sunburned, stepping on a crab or, the worst, getting stung by a jellyfish!

Jellyfish are the major non-polyp form of individuals of the phylum Cnidaria. They get around by using their umbrella top, or bell, as propulsion and use their stinging tentacles to capture prey…or just ruin your beach day. Jellyfish can be found in every ocean and sometimes even in fresh water. The most dangerous jellyfish is the Chironex fleckeri, more commonly known as the box jellyfish. It’s sting is excruciatingly painful and usually results in death! Another well known villain is the Portuguese Man O’ War, whose stings often induce fever, shock, and heart or lung problems!

Needless to say, we urge you to stay far away from jellyfish in the ocean. But we decided there was nothing wrong with having a jellyfish on your screen!
